Overview

The Foundation for Food Safety Certification (founded in 2004) developed FSSC 22000, an international standard for the certification of Food Safety Management Systems; specifically for food manufacturers. It combines the requirements of ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management Systems requirements) and ISO/TS 22002-1 which specifies requirements for establishing, implementing and maintaining prerequisite programs (PRP) to assist in controlling food safety hazards. The specification ISO/TS 22002-1 has recently superseded PAS 220 as the prerequisite program on food safety for food manufacturing.

The FSSC 22000 scheme is fully recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GSFI); the key entity driving the harmonization of international food safety standards. The GFSI is an organization committed to the benchmarking of food safety management schemes, encouraging convergence between an abundance of food safety standards and schemes.

Having adopted the fundamental approach of ISO 22000, FSC 22000 can be seamlessly integrated with other management system standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. FSSC 22000 is a significant milestone towards a single, internationally accredited and recognized superior food safety standard.
